IY 9.98

An eco-sustainable, innovative, and technological boat
designed to deliver unforgettable emotions

Choosing to build an eco-friendly sailing yacht goes beyond the mere act of crafting a vessel; it is a strategic, ethical, and visionary choice that redefines nautical standards to tackle the environmental, social, and economic challenges of our time.

Building an IY 9.98 using advanced and sustainable materials is an ambitious challenge. This model perfectly embodies the dual essence of the shipyard: an exceptional yacht for family cruising in its elegant version and almost unbeatable on racecourses in its high-performance edition. It is an innovative and bold project aimed at setting new standards in the sailing world.

Italia Yachts 9.98  nextgen is a project taking shape to enable conscious sailing. It is a high-performance yet easy-to-handle yacht, thanks to its optimal balance between upwind and downwind performance in both strong and light winds.

Designed for enjoyable and sporty sailing, the Italia Yachts 9.98, even in its NextGen version, will satisfy those who enjoy racing as well as those who prefer short family cruises.

The IY 9.98 NextGen will be a fast, safe yacht, capable of delivering thrilling experiences every time.

Technology and Engineering

The project introduces significant technological solutions aimed at achieving a product that is both technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable. Our objective is to contribute to the ecological transition of the nautical sector by delivering a green yacht equipped with the most innovative 4.0 monitoring systems, designed and built with an emphasis on environmental sustainability and the responsible use of natural resources. The goal is to minimize environmental impact during production, use, and disposal. This effort supports decarbonization and waste reduction through a dual approach:

Sustainable and Recyclable Raw Materials: We are exploring the potential use of eco-friendly and recyclable raw materials for the primary components of the project.

Recycled Organic and Inorganic Materials: We are analyzing the best available recovered materials to create recyclable, green products for the nautical sector, which will be used in the design and construction of secondary components.

Construction and Details

Building sustainable yachts requires close monitoring of the production process to ensure the highest quality while adhering to sustainability criteria throughout the life cycle. To this end, the project’s initial phase will include detailed analyses and the development of two cutting-edge 4.0 systems:

  • Production-To-Management (Gene.Sys): A digital, integrated approach to managing the life cycle of composite components, encompassing production, operation, and maintenance.
  • Fiber Optic Monitoring (FibO): A system for monitoring component performance and predicting wear on materials and structures.
Additionally, the project will test new recyclable materials suitable for nautical applications, significantly reducing the product's environmental footprint throughout its life cycle. These materials will be used in secondary components of the yacht.

Exterior design

The deck lines are designed to strike the best balance between ergonomic maneuverability, spatial efficiency, and interior volume, while maintaining a strong focus on aesthetics. With carefully sculpted shapes and chamfers, the design achieves low aerodynamic drag and a sleek, modern look. Clean airflow around the coach roof was a guiding principle for the designers, resulting in a functional, ergonomically efficient, and safe deck layout, suitable for both crewed and short-handed sailing.

Externally, the Italia 9.98 NextGen retains the successful characteristics of the original IY 9.98, widely praised for fast cruising and competitive racing. It features a twin-wheel or tiller steering system. The hull will be built using recyclable resin, glass, and recycled PET materials. The structures will also use recyclable resin and glass, while the deck will incorporate flax fiber in addition to these materials. Flax fiber will also be used for the headliners and structural furniture, combined with eco-epoxy or recyclable resin.

Interior design

The IY 9.98 is also suited for extended cruising, combining thrilling sailing performance with refined, welcoming interiors crafted with meticulous artisanal care. The interior layout includes two cabins, an aft bathroom, and a central saloon with a dinette, galley, and chart table. The modern design features gelcoat surfaces, functional for both racing and cruising. Some components, such as cabinets and lockers, are fabric-based and removable to reduce displacement during races. Doors are equipped with thresholds and aluminum-framed finishes to enhance durability during intensive use. The chart table is positioned in the saloon, while the L-shaped galley includes a sink, fridge compartment, and gimbaled stove.
